Victoria
British Columbia's capital doubles as one of the best whale-watching cities on earth. The Salish Sea in front of Victoria is patrolled by Bigg's orcas year-round, humpbacks crowd in through summer and fall, and the Race Rocks lighthouse reserve stacks sea lions, seals and seabirds onto a few rocky acres.
Trips leave right from the Inner Harbour and Ogden Point — you can walk from a downtown hotel to a departure in minutes. Fast open boats cover the whale grounds in a couple of hours; covered cruisers make a calmer half-day of it. Twenty minutes west, Sooke is the saltwater fishing side of the story, with chinook staging on Constance Bank and the bluffs from spring through fall.
Victoria works as a gateway, too: guests often pair a city stay with a charter here, then head up-island for Barkley Sound fishing or the west coast surf towns. With ferries and the airport close by, it's the easiest place in BC to start a wild itinerary.
