Tofino
Tofino is the west coast's most famous destination — surf beaches, storm watching and Clayoquot Sound. What many visitors don't realize is that some of the island's best fishing and calmest wildlife water is a scenic 90-minute drive away in Barkley Sound.
When the outer coast off Tofino is blown out, Barkley Sound is often still fishable — its islands and channels give local captains protected options that open-coast operators simply don't have. That's why serious anglers staying in Tofino routinely make the drive to Port Alberni for a charter.
Make it a day: leave Tofino early, fish or cruise through the afternoon, and be back for dinner on the harbour. Or flip your itinerary and spend a night in harbourside lodging in Port Alberni — the drive along Kennedy Lake and the Kennedy River canyon is one of the prettiest on Vancouver Island.
