Campbell River
Campbell River has been synonymous with salmon fishing for over a century — the Tyee Club has run its rowboat-only fishery here since 1924, and Discovery Passage funnels every fish headed for the big mainland rivers right past town. This is heritage fishing water, minutes from the dock.
The fishing grounds start almost at the breakwater: Discovery Passage's tide lines stack bait and chinook within sight of downtown, Quadra Island's shorelines hold coho and pinks all summer, and the offshore banks produce halibut and lingcod. In late summer, guided snorkel trips literally float you down the river through tens of thousands of migrating salmon.
Campbell River is also the jumping-off point for the Discovery Islands and the mainland inlets beyond — day-long wildlife runs where grizzlies graze the estuaries in the fall, and humpbacks and Bigg's orcas work the passes. An easy 1.5-hour drive north of Nanaimo on the Island Highway, with marinas, lodges and outfitters concentrated along the waterfront.
