Port Alberni

Port Alberni sits at the head of the Alberni Inlet, Vancouver Island's longest fjord, and it's the busiest port on Book Wild BC. The Somass River salmon runs funnel millions of fish past these docks every year — which is why this working harbour town calls itself the Salmon Capital of the World.

Most Port Alberni trips depart from Harbour Quay in the heart of town, five minutes from downtown and an easy 2.5-hour drive from Nanaimo or 3.5 from Victoria. Boats, crews and places to stay — the outfitters here keep everything within a few hundred metres of the water.

From the harbour a charter can be into productive salmon water in minutes, watching black bears work the shoreline within the hour, and out among the whales of Barkley Sound the same morning. If you only have one day on Vancouver Island's west coast, Port Alberni is the place to spend it — and if you have longer, harbourside cabins and crew houses keep you steps from the dock.
